Bulgaria cancels BLUE ZONE and RED ZONE trademarks

On 3 July 2025, the Bulgarian Supreme Administrative Court reversed lower court rulings in cases No. 853/25 and No. 200/25 and invalidated trademark registrations for СИНЯ ЗОНА (BLUE ZONE) and ЧЕРВЕНА ЗОНА (RED ZONE), concluding that the marks violated public policy and were potentially deceptive.

EU General Court allows registration of short jingle as sound mark

In Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe v. European Union Intellectual Property Office, the General Court of the European Union on 10 September 2025 reversed the decision of the Board of Appeal of the European Union Intellectual Property (EUIPO), ruling that Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe's four-tone melody could function as a distinctive EU sound mark for Class 39 transport-related services as it met the distinctiveness requirement under Article 7(1)(b) of the EUTMR.
